Hull’s music community had something special to celebrate last week. On Thursday, Gig Buddies proudly took home the Local Impact Award at the Music Cities Awards, hosted inside the stunning Hull Minster. It’s a well deserved recognition for a project that’s transforming how learning disabled people experience the city’s cultural life.

 

Gig Buddies is built on a simple but powerful belief: everyone has the right to go out, enjoy live events, stay up late and feel part of their local scene. Their work helps remove barriers that often prevent learning disabled people from accessing mainstream social spaces, making sure they can take part in the gigs, venues and nightlife many of us take for granted.

 

Winning the Local Impact Award shines a spotlight on the difference they’re making - not just for individuals, but for Hull’s wider cultural landscape. It’s a celebration of inclusion, community and the joy of shared experiences.

 

With more people wanting to join the programme, Gig Buddies is now looking for new volunteers. Volunteers are paired with a “buddy” and head out together to gigs and events around Hull - from grassroots venues to bigger stages.
