This spring marks a special moment for Hull’s theatre community as John Godber’s Teechers returns to the Hull Truck stage from Tuesday 21 April to Thursday 30 April. For many people in the city, this play isn’t just a piece of theatre - it’s part of Hull’s cultural heartbeat.
Originally written and performed in 1987, Teechers made its debut at the Edinburgh Festival with the Hull Truck Theatre Company. That early success helped shape the company’s national reputation and cemented the play as a defining work in Hull’s creative history. Its humour, honesty, and sharp look at school life struck a chord then, and it continues to resonate today.
For this new tour, Godber has reimagined Teechers for a post‑Covid world. While the spirit of the original remains, the updated version brings new relevance and reflections on the teaching challenges and changes of recent years.
One of the joys of the play is watching a small cast deliver big performances. With just three cast members taking on more than 20 roles, the show is packed with quick changes, clever character work, and the kind of inventive storytelling that has always made Hull Truck productions stand out.
Bringing Teechers back to Hull is more than a revival - it’s a return to where the story began. Whether you’re revisiting the play or experiencing it for the first time, this production offers a chance to reconnect with a piece of theatre that has helped shape the city’s cultural identity for nearly four decades.
