Hull and East Yorkshire Children’s University has launched Storytime in Hull, a new storytelling video series designed to encourage reading across the region. The project has been developed in partnership with Hull’s award winning INIT Creative and forms part of the National Year of Reading. The aim: to give schools and families easy access to engaging stories read aloud by familiar local faces.
HEY Children’s University works with children living in disadvantaged areas of Hull and East Yorkshire, creating opportunities and experiences they may not otherwise have. Their programmes help children explore new interests, build confidence, and imagine possibilities for their future. Storytime in Hull adds to this work by focusing on literacy and making reading feel more accessible and enjoyable.
Each episode in the series features a well known figure from Hull reading aloud a book, taking inspiration from CBeebies Bedtime Stories. The identity of each reader is being kept secret until their episode goes live, giving schools and families something to look forward to as the series unfolds. New episodes will be released every two weeks in the build up to the summer holidays.
All videos will be shared directly with local schools and uploaded to YouTube, making them easy to watch both in the classroom and at home. Anyone who wants to keep up with the series can follow the charity online, where new episodes will be announced as they become available.
With Storytime in Hull, HEY Children's University and INIT Creative are working together to make reading more accessible, more engaging, and more connected to the Hull community. With each new episode, another story begins - and another child might just discover a love of reading that lasts a lifetime.
