A new awards programme is set to celebrate the people, clubs and organisations helping to make Hull a more active, inclusive and inspiring place through sport.

The inaugural Hull Sports Awards will recognise achievements across all levels of sport and physical activity, shining a spotlight not only on successful athletes but also on the coaches, volunteers and community groups whose efforts support participation across the city.

From rising young talent and dedicated grassroots volunteers to organisations breaking down barriers to participation, the awards aim to showcase the positive impact sport has on communities across Hull and the surrounding area.

The awards have been developed through a partnership between Hull City Council, Hull Culture & Leisure and Active Humber, with 10 categories designed to reflect the breadth of sporting achievement across the city.

Categories include Adult Sportsperson of the Year, Junior Sportsperson of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and the Active, Diversity and Inclusion Award. A Disability Sportsperson of the Year category has also been introduced to help recognise and celebrate excellence in disability sport.

The idea for the Hull Sports Awards emerged from a conversation between Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, and Hull City captain Lewie Coyle, who shared a vision of creating a dedicated event to recognise the city's sporting talent and commitment.

Nominations will open at 9am on Monday 9 November and close at 5pm on Tuesday 15 December.

Individuals nominated for an award should either live within the HU1 to HU9 postcode area or make a meaningful contribution to a sport, physical activity or movement organisation serving those communities. Clubs and organisations based outside those postcodes may also be considered where their work has a significant impact on Hull residents.

Nominations can be submitted through a written statement of up to 500 words or an optional one-minute video, alongside a completed nomination form. Both submission methods will be assessed equally.

People may be nominated in more than one category, although a separate nomination form tailored to the relevant criteria must be completed for each award. Organisers have stressed that strong supporting evidence is more important than the number of nominations an individual receives.

Once nominations have been received, nominees will be contacted to confirm they are happy to be considered. Finalists will then be invited to attend the first Hull Sports Awards ceremony, which will take place at Hull City Hall on Tuesday 9 February 2027.
