Tree Stories is an 18‑month community nature project led by Hull and East Riding Friends of the Earth (HERFoE) in partnership with local climate artist Lauren Saunders. The project encourages people to help new trees thrive, support the care and protection of existing trees, and strengthen local climate resilience and biodiversity. Through creativity, culture, and education, Tree Stories aims to weave environmental action into everyday community life, inspiring long term stewardship and a deeper connection with the natural world.

They're encouraging local VCSEs, community groups and public facing organisations/projects to join forces in helping people get more connected to trees and nature. There are a few ways that you could do this, mainly:

  • Spend time with a tree - Connect with a tree in whatever way feels natural. Your response can be creative, scientific, historical or personal - every perspective is valued. When you're ready, send in your Tree Story to Friends of the Earth

  • Join local Tree Stories activities - Take part in events run by HERFoE and community partners. Learn how to care for existing trees, plant new ones, explore creative or scientific links with nature, find inspiration for your own Tree Story, and discover new ways of seeing the living world around you. Check out the programme or follow HERFoE on social media for updates

  • Encourage others to get involved - Invite family, friends, colleagues or the people you support to take part. Plan your own tree themed activities, organise something at work, or help spread the word by sharing posts, putting up posters, and telling your community about the project

  • Support as an organisation - If your organisation can help the public connect with trees through free, tree focused community events, see the ‘Encouraging Our Community’ section via the link below. Friends of the Earth are keen to bring every corner of the community together under the Tree Stories canopy and shine a light on the brilliant local projects already happening on our doorstep.
