British Film Institute Opens Support for UK Debut Directors
The British Film Institute has opened applications for the Discovery strand of its Filmmaking Fund - a UK wide programme backing bold, original live action and animated feature films, especially from teams working beyond London and the South East.
The strand supports projects that align with BFI priorities, including broader representation, strong audience impact, support for early career filmmakers, and sustainable production practices.
Funding of up to £1 million is available for films led by debut directors with production budgets between £1 million and £3.5 million. Eligible costs cover everything from crew and cast payments to production fees, legal costs, and other essentials that get a feature off the ground.
Applications must be submitted by the film’s producer, through a UK registered limited company.
