As the West Central area includes the city centre, it also includes a large number of the cities cultural assets.
Major Cultural Venues
The West Central ward is home to all of the cities free museums and gallery which are operated by Hull Culture and Leisure. These include the Museums Quarter (Streetlife Museum, Hull and East Riding Museum of Archaeology and Wilberforce House Museum), the Hands on History Museum and Ferens Art Gallery. The Hull Maritime Project has seen an investment of £xxm in the restoration and refurbishment of the cities Maritime assets including the Hull Maritime Museum, Spurn Lightship, Queens Gardens and the Arctic Corsair and North End Shipyard. Once complete, these assets link together to form a Maritime trial around the city centre.
The West Central area is also home to the cities major venues. Connexin Live is the city’s largest venue with a 4000 capacity, hosting major touring artists and large-scale live events, Other venues include the Welly Club is known nationally for its atmosphere. The New Adelphi Club, is a national institution, celebrated for its intimate setting and strong links to independent music. Meanwhile, The Polar Bear offers a smaller, grassroots space focused on new bands, alternative music, and supporting Hull’s creative scene. There are a number of theatres in the area, including the Hull Culture and Leisure operated, Hull New Theatre, refurbished in 2017 which is a major receiving house on the touring show calendar, Hull Truck Theatre, one of the cities NPO and a producer of shows in the city and finally Middlechild Theatre who have recently opened an intimate theatre on Humber Street.
Libraries in your Ward
Hull Central Library, Western Library, and Gipsyville Library all support learning and community life in Hull. Hull Central Library is the largest, offering wide resources, study spaces, and cultural events in the city centre. Western Library serves its local area with lending, computer access, and community activities, while Gipsyville Library provides accessible services for families and residents, promoting literacy and digital skills.

Alongside Ferens Art Gallery and Hull's contemporary art gallery, Humber Street Gallery, the area is home to Feral Art School, Juice Studios, Ground Gallery, Pier Street Pop-Up, and The Artisan at Home, creating a vibrant cluster of creative spaces. These venues support emerging and established artists, offering exhibitions, workshops, studios, and temporary pop-up shows that showcase Hull’s diverse and evolving arts scene while encouraging community engagement.
Community Centres
Edinburgh Street Community Centre, Maurice Rawling Community Centre, The New Walton Club, West Hull Community Hub, The Octagon – Goodwin Development Trust, The Warren Youth Project, and Giroscope 46 Community Centre all play key roles in supporting local communities across Hull. Together they provide welcoming spaces for social activities, youth work, education, health initiatives, and recreation, helping to reduce isolation and bring people of all ages together.
